Prof. Dr. Jörg Bettmer

Short biography

Jörg Bettmer is currently full professor at the University of Oviedo, Spain. He defended his PhD thesis on a topic of elemental speciation of lead and mercury under the supervision of Professor Karl Cammann in 1996 at the University of Münster, Germany. After several postdoc stays, he continued his work in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Mainz, Germany, and he obtained his “venia legendi” in 2004 (Professor Klaus G. Heumann). His work during this period was focused on elemental speciation, metallomics, etc. His research at that time was awarded with the “Bunsen-Kirchhoff Award 2007” (German Society of Chemistry, GDCh) and the “Mattauch-Herzog Award 2007” (German Society of Mass Spectrometry, DGMS). In the same year, he moved to the University of Oviedo as a Ramón y Cajal researcher. His current interests of research are principally focused on the analysis of small objects like nanoparticles and individual cells using complementary techniques like ICP-MS, LC-MS/MS and TEM. He intends to contribute to the general understanding of the uptake of elemental species in individual cells and the formation of the biogenic nanomaterials in various organisms.
